Is it ideal to get catastrophic health insurance? I don’t get insurance through my employer so I’m considering getting insured. I’m 25 and have no health problems to speak of.

Most people who get catastrophic health insurance are usually healthy individuals in their 20s or those nearing the retirement age of 50 to 65. Some unemployed individuals and even people like you who don’t get insurance from their employers also purchase this type of health insurance plan. Catastrophic coverage may be purchased as a group plan or individually.

Catastrophic health insurance plans normally have high deductible and low monthly premiums. With this type of plan, you usually have to pay out of pocket for visits to the doctor’s office and prescriptions. Major medical expenses that may include hospital stays, intensive care, surgery, and laboratory tests are covered in this plan. You also have to pass pre-existing medical condition screenings before you can purchase catastrophic health insurance. Some of the pre-existing conditions not covered by this type of plan include heart diseases, cancer, emphysema, and diabetes, among others.

You also have to compare different catastrophic health insurance policies from several insurance companies. You should look at premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket expense, level of coverage, co-pays for visits to the doctor’s office, and pre-existing conditions exclusions. If you have no major health issues and you can afford the deductible and premiums of this type of plan, then catastrophic health insurance may just be ideal for you.
