Insurance Portability for Brain Tumors
Given the seriousness of your wife’s medical condition, it is imperative that you are certain that a new health insurance plan will be available to you immediately upon your relocation and that no waiting periods apply to her pre-existing medical condition. You do not mention what state you are moving from, but there is a good chance that your current health plan will not be portable to Massachusetts. The state of Massachusetts is one of the few states that offer “guaranteed issue” health insurance on the individual market. This means that an insurance company can’t deny your wife coverage, regardless of her health status. However, you want to avoid any lapse in coverage by making sure that you apply for coverage prior to relocating. This may be difficult if you have not yet established a residence in that state. It would be advisable to contact a couple of insurance carriers in Massachusetts and explain your situation. You can start with Blue Cross Blue Shield at 800-262-BLUE. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

We are moving from Nevada. I am going to work for a new company and my insurance will start with them 30 days after my start date. We have found a home, but have not moved in yet, so we are not official residents of Massachusetts yet.

You are in a tough situation, but not an uncommon one. If your current health insurance is through an employer, are they giving you a COBRA option that will provide you with coverage in MA? If not, and you have family or friends in Nevada, maybe you should consider not having your wife relocate to MA until you have secured coverage under your new group health plan. Then, you can place her on the COBRA plan for 30 days until her new health insurance becomes effective.

What happens to my COBRA health insurance if I move out of the state? I live in California and I have and use COBRA to keep my Humana Insurance maintained. My question is if I will be able to keep it going when I move out of state? I am moving soon too Washington (DC) and I want to keep my Humana insurance because they have been easy to deal with. Can I transfer my policy to Humana in Washington. If I can’t do this, what other options do I have? I have 12 months left on COBRA. I would like to avoid switching carrier. I also would not be happy about going of COBRA and onto an individual plan even if I can afford it.
