Will my Blue Cross insurance still cover my pregnancy even if I quit my job? If not, will my pregnancy be considered a pre-existing condition if I am added to my husband’s health insurance?

  1. If you quit your job, you will be able to stay on your current coverage if you go on COBRA. Blue Cross will still cover the pregnancy if you stay on COBRA/You won’t be able to get an individual private policy if you are pregnant and don’t accept COBRA, so it depends on what type on health insurance your husband has.

If not, you may need to get a supplemental insurance. Blue Cross COBRA is one option. However, COBRA can be expensive you might need to pay as much as $600 a month per person to get COBRA’s health insurance plan. If you decide to sign up for COBRA, the amount of time you can stay on it will depend on the size of your employer and the state where you live

Being added to your husband’s health insurance is another option. However, you need to check on the type of insurance your husband has. Pregnancy, prior to signing up for the plan, is often considered a pre-existing condition by most health insurance companies. Check your husband’s health insurance to be sure. It depends on how long you have been insured under your current policy because any pre-existing condition exclusion periods might be waived.

  2. Your best option will likely be to accept your COBRA and maintain your current coverage with Blue Cross if you are satisfied with the maternity benefits that they provide. If your husband’s health insurance is under a group plan, you can compare the maternity benefits and see if they are better than your Blue Cross plan. If they are, you might still need to wait until open enrollment before you can be added to his plan. If you don’t have a COBRA option through Blue Cross, you might be able to get on his policy sooner. This will also be influenced by the amount of time you have been covered under your current policy with Blue Cross since you don’t want pre-existing condition exclusion periods if you switch plans.
