My healthcare is currently covered by Blue Cross insurance through my employer. If I lose my job, how can I continue on with Blue Cross insurance? Is this possible?

If you lose your job, your coverage under Blue Cross insurance would also be terminated. However, your employer might be required to continue your existing Blue Cross coverage if you elect to do so under COBRA. This depends on the number of employees and the state in which you reside. Your employer must provide you with the COBRA forms within 14 days after you leave the company. In turn, you have to decide if you will take on COBRA within 60 days of receiving the forms.

Your Blue Cross insurance coverage will continue under the COBRA program for up to 18 months. However, you are responsible for the full premiums and you have to make sure that you pay your monthly premiums on time. If you miss even one payment, then you will lose your COBRA insurance altogether. You will have no chance to continue on with the plan or even the payments.

When you become employed again, there may be a waiting period before your new employer’s plan is available to you. You can continue with your Blue Cross insurance under the COBRA program during that waiting period, as long as there is no lapse in health insurance coverage exceeding 63 days.

Another option which you can explore is healthcare coverage directly through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Check the website of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of your State for free insurance quotes. The rates are generally affordable and you can pay for them even if you don’t have a job.
