My current health insurance does not cover or reimburse expenses for home births. Does Blue Cross cover expenses for home births?

In the language of insurance companies, the correct term for home births is ‘out-of-hospital’ setting. The insurance company is not paying for the home birth itself, but for the services of the midwife. Thus, in home births, the insurance company is paying for the services of the ‘out-of-network’ provider for an ‘out-of-hospital birth.’

If you have a good health plan, Blue Cross usually reimburses 80% of the total expenses for home births. It might be better if your midwife can be backed up by a doctor that belongs in the Blue Cross’s network of specialists. In this case, Blue Cross will fully reimburse your home birth expenses.

However, you still need to check if Blue Cross covers expenses for home births or those in birth centers. Check the website of Blue Cross or call them and verify the maternity coverage of your health plan.

  1. If you are currently pregnant, this answer is irrelevant. Blue Cross will not accept you on an individual health plan until after your child has been born. Now is not the best time to try and switch health plans.
