If I wanted to buy a Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance from my husband’s employer, can they deny my application?

You may be added to your husband’s Blue Cross Blue Shield group policy if his company has a group plan through BCBS. But you don’t normally buy from or through his employer.

If your husband wants to include you in Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance group policy, the company usually cannot deny this application.

If by any circumstance you lost your own health insurance coverage, usually, they will have to add you in your husband’s health insurance. But you may have to be quick to notify them in such cases. There may be a lapse in coverage of over 63 days for pre-existing conditions which is usually 18 months. You may want to check with Blue Cross Blue Shield as to within how many days can you make a request. In some policies it usually runs from 30 to 31 days only, otherwise, you may have to wait for the open enrollment which is usually held annually. Contact Blue Cross Blue Shield within that period and check if you are eligible for the special enrollment period. If you do, send your request in writing and make necessary follow-ups every now and then.

Another thing that may also prevent you from being added to your husband’s Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance is if you do not have proof of involuntary loss of coverage.

  1. The article above is correct concerning being added to you husband’s plan. One thing you may wish to consider is an individual policy. If you are in good health you should check out this option. An individual policy is much less expensive than group coverage. This is possible because the insurer will check your medical records and ask you to disclose any medical concerns. They have the ability to not accept people that do not meet their underwriting guidelines. You end up with a group of people that are less of a risk to the insurer and this allows them to charge a much lower premium.

  2. You can be added to your husband’s group health plan with BCBS, but typically only during the annual enrollment period. His employer may even pay a portion of the premium, depending on their policy. Compare the rates of being added to your husband’s coverage with individual options available with BCBS or other insurance carriers
