I have a BCBS NJ HMO plan. Since I am moving to MA this June, do I also have to switch my BCBS plan to that state? Is it possible to transfer my BCBS plan from NJ to MA? How many days will I have to wait for this to be active?

BCBS is owned by each state.  Each state has its own rules as well as insurance underwritings that vary from one state to another.  Therefore, switching from one BCBS to another may usually be impossible.  You may not even find a policy in MA similar to the one you have in NJ.  With this in mind, you very well may have to undergo the application procedure again.

Complications in the application depend entirely on the availability of pre-existing conditions which may result to either a denial of the application or an exclusion of that condition.

However, if the case of moving from one state to another is a matter of work site relocation with the same employer, a transfer could work.  BCBS MA may even carry-over pre-existing condition based on their policy.

While waiting for the approval of your BCBS MA application you can get a short term temporary health insurance plan (we recommend an indemnity plan) to cover you for the time being.  This may take about a month to get in place depending on the law of that state.
