Application Processing Time
Can you tell me how long it takes for me to get an approval on my health insurance? I did an online application on Monday and I need to have my insurance approved by the first because my current insurance is ending on Dec 31st.
The processing time for a health insurance application can depend on several factors. Can we ask a few questions that will help us further guide you?
What insurance company did you apply with?
What state do you live in?
Do you have any pre-existing medical conditions that were listed on the application?
What type of health insurance do you have that is ending on December 31st?
I completed an application through the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois website. The only pre-existing medical conditions I have are allergies and just take over-the-counter medication for it. I am retiring from my job and don’t want to go on the COBRA because it is too expensive. That is why I need my new insurance approved ASAP.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois is very efficient in processing new online applications. The only thing that could delay this would be if they need medical records. But, if you are healthy and only suffer from allergies, they probably won’t ask for medical records. At worst, they may request for you to sign an elimination rider for the treatment of allergies. Due to the holiday season, most insurance companies are operating at less than full staff, so application processing may take a few extra days. Once the application is approved, provided it is approved within the first week on January, your effective date of coverage will still be January 1st.
Do not decline your COBRA option until you have been approved by BCBS Illinois. It is impossible to know what the insurance company may discover during the underwriting process that could delay your approval. You will have 60 days to decide if you want to accept your COBRA option. During this period, you are still covered under the group health plan, in the event that you were to have an unexpected illness or injury. If you do use the benefits of your group health plan during this COBRA option period, you will need to accept your COBRA option and pay the required premium in order to have your claims processed. If you do not require medical attention during this period, and your BCBS individual policy has been approved, your COBRA option will automatically terminate at the end of your option period and you will not be held liable for premium payment.

I want to give Humana Health Insurance a ‘thumbs up’ for being very fast with their medical underwriting. They were fast and fair when dealing with my application. I felt like they really tried to keep my application time to a minimum which I strongly appreciate. But most important, they were not as strict as other health insurance companies in Illinois. I had been rejected by two well known companies before coming to humans. I have heard that they have a good reputation for taking on clients with on-going issues as long as they are not life threatening.
I would like to recommend Humana Health Insurance to those who have a health history that may cause some concern. They have a phone-in application process where you get to talk to an actual person as opposed to an anonymous employee looking only at your papers. There are some exceptions though such as if you are a smoker or obese. In those cases I’ve experienced that Humana Health Insurance is quite expensive.
