Alternative Medicine

I am searching for an insurance company that will cover routine visits at the Naturopath and Holistic Medicine clinic in my city. Can you please send me a list?

We do not maintain a database of all insurance companies that are associated with a specific physician, hospital or alternative medical clinic. In fact, we are not aware that such information is available. You might try doing your search for a health insurance company in reverse. Start by asking this specialty clinic which insurance companies will accept their claims for payment. Perhaps they even know which health insurance companies offer the best benefits for the type of treatment you are receiving at this clinic.

Trying to look at many different insurance companies to determine if they work with this clinic and if they provide benefits for Naturopathic and Holistic medicine would be a task that could literally take you weeks and you may still not receive a definite answer. When shopping for health insurance, your will initially receive a plan summary of the benefits that are of the greatest concern to the majority of people seeking health insurance. So, the benefit summaries may not include the benefits associated with this type of treatment. You would be more likely to find this type of medicine practice listed in the exclusions and benefits section of a health insurance brochure, since many insurance companies are hesitant about providing coverage for treatments and practices that are deemed “alternative” or “experimental.”

In contacting your alternative medical clinic, ask if you can speak to their claims department. They should be able to give you a better understanding and explanation of the types of health insurance benefits you can expect, and the insurance companies that are likely to be more accepting of this treatment type.

  1. Hi all!
I am a big fan of non-traditional health care and have used many different treatments over the years with really good results. I have used acupuncture and massage as well as chiropractic treatments for aches in my back and it has helped me a lot, so much in fact that I have been able to cut out painkillers entirely, so I would encourage others to try for themselves!

It’s true that most insurance companies does not offer coverage for alternative medicine, but it is possible to get health insurance that will allow such treatments. My experience is that a good number of insurance companies will allow acupuncture and chiropractic because those have finally been accepted by the medical community, but not so many will cover herbal medicine and homeopathy. So when you want to get health insurance to cover this, you have to work them a little.

Try explaining to them why it is cost effective for them to have this treatment now instead of expensive treatment later. Also remember to ask your alternative practitioner if he or she accepts your insurance plan and if they have experience in handling insurance claims.

If you can’t get your insurance company to budge, try making a payment schedule instead of paying all at once. Most practitioners will agree to this as they want to treat deserving patients even if they can’t pay all at one installment.
