I am 19 years old and currently attending college. I frequently go to a doctor and take a lot of medicines due to hypoglycemia and immune system problem. I am a covered dependent on my father’s Aetna health insurance through his work. Just previously, in a heated argument, my dad threatened to cut me off from his health insurance if I don’t cooperate with what he and my mom wants. Is it possible for my dad to remove me as a covered dependent from his insurance?
Moreover, he doesn’t have to wait for Open Enrollment to make changes on his Aetna health plan, granted that there exist a ”qualifying event”. This “qualifying event” is just a matter of denial of your father to recognize you as an eligible dependent. Staying out of college and exceeding the eligible age as set by the policy (usually from 18 to 23 years old) automatically disqualify you as a dependent in your father’s Aetna health insurance. Since you’re about as close to that age margin, you should start planning already your own health insurance. You may consider checking the provided student insurance of your school. Otherwise, you might end up with no health coverage at all. However, staying on your parent’s health insurance coverage is about the cheapest insurance that you can get.
